Restrictions Blanket Kashmir After Protests Over Khamenei Killing

Srinagar, Mar 2,: Authorities on Monday imposed restrictions across all districts of Kashmir following widespread protests against the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, aiming to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the Valley.

Security was placed on high alert throughout the region, with additional deployments of police and paramilitary personnel in sensitive areas. The City Centre Lal Chowk in Srinagar was sealed and declared out of bounds for both pedestrians and vehicular movement. Barricades were erected at multiple entry points, and security forces were seen maintaining a tight vigil.

Eyewitnesses said movement in Lal Chowk remained minimal, with a few people walking by foot in ones or twos under close monitoring. Shops in the commercial hub stayed shut, and public transport remained off the roads.

Other parts of Srinagar also witnessed restrictions, particularly in downtown areas and major intersections considered sensitive. Security personnel conducted patrols while checkpoints were established to regulate movement.

Officials described the measures as precautionary, stating that the steps were taken to prevent any untoward incident following the protests witnessed a day earlier. While no major incident was reported on Monday till the filing of this report, the situation continued to remain tense but under control.

Authorities have urged locals to maintain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to preserve peace. [KNT]
