Streetlights Defunct in Srinagar outskirts, Inhabitants Seek Immediate Restoration

Srinagar, Feb 24,: A large number of streetlights in Shah Naqshband Colony, Umerabad Zainakote area of Srinagar have reportedly gone defunct, plunging several lanes into darkness and causing serious inconvenience to inhabitants, particularly during the ongoing holy month.

Locals told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the problem is acute in areas near Noora Hospital, where multiple streetlights have remained non-functional for several days. They said the lack of illumination has made it extremely difficult for people to move around during the early-morning Sehri hours and late-evening Taraweeh prayers.

Inhabitants said that dark streets have heightened the risk of stray dog attacks, as several dogs are often seen either roaming freely or sleeping on the roads. The absence of proper lighting makes it difficult to notice them in advance, creating panic among pedestrians.

They added that elderly persons, women and little children are the worst affected, as venturing out alone for prayers at nearby mosques has become unsafe. Some inhabitants said they are compelled to carry mobile flashlights to navigate through the lanes.

Locals have appealed to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps for restoration of the defunct streetlights to ensure public safety and smooth movement during the holy month. They urged the authorities to treat the matter as urgent in view of the religious gatherings taking place before dawn and after evening prayers. [KNT]
