Shopian, Sonamarg shiver at minus 6°C, Gulmarg minus 5°C

Srinagar, Jan 21,: A sharp cold wave continued to grip the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday as Shopian and Sonamarg recorded the lowest minimum temperatures, plunging to minus 6 degrees Celsius each, according to weather data.

Shopian in south Kashmir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir jointly emerged as the coldest places in the region during the night, reflecting the intensification of winter chill across higher and plain areas alike. The prolonged sub-zero temperatures have led to freezing conditions in several localities, affecting daily life and water supply in parts of the Valley.

Gulmarg, the famous ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded the third lowest minimum temperature at minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, remaining under the grip of severe cold. The resort has been witnessing sustained freezing nights, adding to the overall cold wave conditions prevailing in the region.

Meteorological officials said the cold spell is typical for this period of winter, with clear night skies contributing to a further drop in minimum temperatures. Locals in the affected areas reported frozen water pipes and icy roads during early morning hours.

The weather department has advised people to take precautions during night and early morning hours, particularly in areas witnessing persistent sub-zero temperatures. Cold conditions are expected to continue, with gradual changes depending on cloud cover and western disturbance activity in the coming days. [KNT]
