Srinagar:Light snowfall was recorded on Monday at Zero Point Zojila, Thajwas in Sonamarg and Minimarg, triggering slippery conditions on the Srinagar–Kargil national highway, while vehicular movement continued from both directions under restricted and monitored conditions, officials said on Monday.
The snowfall occurred amid an ongoing cold wave across the Kashmir Valley, with cloudy skies persisting through the day. The fresh spell added to the season’s harsh conditions in higher reaches, particularly along the Zojila axis, which serves as the only surface link between the Valley and Ladakh during the winter months.
Officials of the Border Roads Organisation said teams were deployed early in the morning to clear critical stretches and improve surface grip. Workers were seen spreading soil and salt at vulnerable patches to prevent skidding and to ensure uninterrupted convoy movement. “Our teams are on the ground across key points between Sonamarg and Minimarg. We have initiated anti-skid measures and are ready with men and machinery to respond to any fresh accumulation,” a BRO official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.
Traffic police confirmed that vehicles were allowed from both sides of the highway, with advisories issued to drivers to proceed with caution. “Traffic is moving in both directions. However, motorists are being told to maintain a safe speed, use snow chains where required, and avoid unnecessary halts on narrow curves,” a senior traffic official said, adding that field teams remained stationed along the axis to regulate movement in case of sudden weather changes.
Locals and drivers passing through the area reported reduced visibility at some stretches during the early hours but said conditions improved as clearance operations continued. [KNT]
