Srinagar, Nov 4,: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has secured the conviction of former Managing Director of J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Bank, Mohammad Shafi Banday, for forging his date of birth to unlawfully extend his service tenure.
According to officials, a complaint had alleged that Banday had manipulated his date of birth from the actual year 1934 to 01.09.1939 by submitting a fake certificate. Verification by the Crime Branch revealed that his real date of birth was 26.06.1932, establishing that the accused overstayed in service for over seven years, causing wrongful gain to himself and financial loss to the State exchequer.
Following the probe, a formal case was registered at the Crime Branch Kashmir (now EOW), and after a detailed investigation, the charges were substantiated. A chargesheet was subsequently filed before the Court for judicial trial.
After a full trial, the Court of City Judge Srinagar found the accused guilty under Sections 420, 468, and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) and sentenced him to two years of simple imprisonment on each count, along with a fine of ₹5,000 per offence. The court ordered that all sentences will run concurrently.
Officials said the conviction highlights the EOW’s continued efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in public institutions, reaffirming its resolve to combat economic offences and maintain integrity in public service. [KNT]
