Two Shops sealed; large quantity of Tobacco products seized in Handwara

AM News Network
Handwara : In its continued efforts to promote a healthy, safe, and drug-free environment for students, Handwara Police, in collaboration with the Executive Magistrate Handwara, today conducted a special checking drive in Handwara town targeting shops located within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions.

The drive was part of an ongoing initiative to enforce the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA), which prohibits the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions.

During the course of checking, two shops were sealed for violating COTPA regulations, and a large quantity of tobacco products was seized on the spot. The action was taken in the presence of the Executive Magistrate, ensuring transparency and adherence to due legal procedure.

Shopkeepers and vendors in the area were sensitized about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the legal implications of selling such products within prohibited zones. They were categorically instructed not to sell tobacco or related products to minors or within restricted areas.

The Handwara Police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing laws aimed at protecting youth from the harmful effects of tobacco and other addictive substances. It was further stated that such drives will continue across the Police District to ensure strict compliance and discourage unhealthy and unlawful practices near schools and colleges.

The public has also been urged to cooperate with police authorities and report any violations to help maintain a tobacco-free and healthy environment for students.
