Three Drug Peddlers Arrested During  Checking in Sopore’s Sangri Top

Sopore: In a fresh action under its ongoing anti-narcotics campaign, Sopore Police arrested three alleged drug peddlers during a naka checking operation at Sangri Top, reinforcing its continued crackdown against narcotics trade in the area.

Police said the accused were intercepted while riding a motorcycle bearing registration number PB07BB-7763. Upon search, a charas-like contraband substance was recovered from their possession. The arrested individuals have been identified as Maqsood Ahmad Lone, son of Abdul Ahad Lone, resident of Rampora; Riyaz Ahmad Dangroo, son of Sonaullah Dangroo, resident of Yamran Bomai; and Syed Ahmad Khan, son of Gulzar Ahmad Khan, resident of Diver Lolab and presently living at Sangri Top Watlab.

A police spokesperson said that a case under FIR No. 213/2025 has been registered at Police Station Sopore under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The investigation has been initiated to trace the source of the contraband and identify possible forward and backward linkages of the arrested trio.

Police sources told KNT that initial findings suggest the group was actively involved in the supply of narcotics across certain local pockets of Sopore, and further arrests could follow based on leads emerging from the ongoing probe. The motorcycle used in the commission of the offence has also been seized.

A senior police officer said that Sopore Police has been maintaining a close watch on individuals with a history of drug peddling and several habitual offenders are already under surveillance. “Our aim is to cut off every supply chain that is pushing youth towards addiction. These arrests are part of that broader effort,” the officer said.

The officer further emphasized that the war against drugs in Sopore will continue with the same intensity. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance approach. Public cooperation is vital, and we urge locals to share any information about drug-related activities. Every tip-off helps us in taking swift action,” he added.

Over the past few months, Sopore Police has stepped up its operations against narcotics, booking several habitual offenders under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. Authorities said such consistent actions have led to significant disruption in local drug networks.

Locals in Sangri Top and adjoining areas have lauded the police initiative, calling it a much-needed step to protect the younger generation from the growing menace of substance abuse. “Drug addiction is eating our society from within. We appreciate the police for taking firm action,” said a local shopkeeper from Bomai area.

Sopore Police reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard the community, particularly the youth, from the devastating effects of narcotic substances. The department assured that intensified surveillance, routine checks, and awareness drives will continue in the coming weeks. [KNT]
