Handwara, Oct 2,: Police in North Kashmir’s Handwara carried out a raid on Wednesday morning at the residence of a man linked to the proscribed Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) organization. The raid, which was conducted in Kohinoor Colony of Handwara town, was, according to the police, part of an ongoing investigation into a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Police sources said that the house of a JEI leader was searched by a police team in connection with FIR No. 29/2019, registered under sections 10 and 13 of the UAPA at Handwara police station. The case pertains to alleged unlawful activities linked to JeI, which has been a banned organization in Jammu and Kashmir since March 2019.

The police maintained that the operation was strictly investigative in nature. “We conducted the search at the residence to gather evidence in connection with the ongoing case,” an officer familiar with the matter told KNT. “No arrest was made during the raid and no recovery of objectionable material took place. The operation concluded peacefully.”

Since the ban, properties linked to JeI leaders have been sealed, and many of its members or sympathizers have been placed under scrutiny.

Over the past several years, the police and the State Investigation Agency (SIA) have widened the scope of cases linked to JeI, with many raids carried out in districts across north and south Kashmir. These include searches of residences, offices, schools, and properties suspected to be affiliated with the banned organization. [KNT]
