Orchard Worker Mauled by Bear, Referred to SKIMS Soura

Kulgam: A man was critically injured after being attacked by a bear in Chhatri Pora village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

The injured has been identified as Ghulam Muhammad Niyaki, son of Abdul Rehman Niyaki, a resident of Chhatri Pora. Officials said he had gone to his orchard for routine work when the wild animal pounced on him, leaving him seriously wounded.

Hearing his cries, locals rushed to the spot and managed to chase the bear away, rescuing him from further harm. Eyewitnesses said the victim was soaked in blood when he was retrieved from the orchard.

He was immediately shifted to District Hospital Kulgam. Considering the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura for advanced treatment.

Wildlife officials said bear sightings and attacks have increased in several parts of South Kashmir as the animals descend into human habitations in search of food. Locals have urged authorities to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents. [KNT]
