Flood scare eases slightly as Jhelum falls to 18 ft, but vigilance continues

Srinagar:The Jhelum River in Srinagar has receded from 21 feet to 18 feet till 12 PM, offering some relief to flood-prone areas along its banks. Authorities, however, continue to keep a close watch on the situation and have urged residents in low-lying localities to remain alert.

Although the river remains virtually in spate, the receding water level has eased fears of an immediate flood threat. Still, memories of the devastating 2014 deluge prompted many locals to act with caution. Locals in Padshahi Bagh, Lasjan, and adjoining areas shifted belongings to safer places, despite repeated assurances from officials.

Many vehicle owners in Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, and Rambagh parked their cars on waterbody bunds to protect them from possible inundation. For locals, the steady fall in Jhelum’s water level is a major relief, though anxiety remains high until conditions stabilize further. [KNT]
