J&K Govt Issues SOPs for School Safety Amid Cloudburst Incidents

Srinagar,18 August: In the wake of recent cloudburst incidents, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has directed all Chief Education Officers and Heads of Institutions (HOIs) to strictly implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of students and staff during inclement weather.

According to an advisory issued by the Directorate of School Education, Kashmir, the measures emphasize heightened vigilance, especially for schools located in areas identified as vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, flash floods, and cloudbursts. Staff have been asked to remain sensitized and trained on safety protocols.

For schools situated near rivers, streams, and lakes, the advisory mandates precautionary measures, including continuous monitoring of water levels and weather forecasts, preparation of clear evacuation plans with designated safe areas, and maintaining open communication with local authorities and disaster management agencies.

The directive also stresses accountability, stating that cooperation from all school staff is essential to safeguard students. Any failure to comply with the directives will be treated as a serious lapse, with personal responsibility for incidents resting solely on the concerned Head of Institution.
