Heavy Downpour in Poonch Raises Fear of Flash Floods, Landslides

Poonch: Continuous rainfall since Monday morning has thrown life out of gear in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, with several low-lying areas witnessing heavy waterlogging and fears mounting of flash floods and landslides.

Officials said the incessant downpour has led to overflowing drains and inundation of roads, hampering vehicular movement and causing hardships to residents. Several stretches along the Poonch–Mandi road and other link routes have been rendered slippery, prompting authorities to advise commuters to avoid unnecessary travel.

“There is a risk of flash floods and landslides in hilly and vulnerable areas due to continuous rainfall. People living near streams and landslide-prone zones are advised to remain alert,” an official from the district administration said.

Rescue and emergency teams have been kept on standby while the irrigation and flood control department is closely monitoring the water levels of major streams in the region.

The meteorological department has predicted more rainfall in the coming 24 hours, warning that localized intense showers may further aggravate the situation.

Meanwhile, authorities appealed to residents not to venture near water bodies, particularly swollen nallahs, and to report any emergencies to control rooms established at the district headquarters. [KNT]
