GMC Anantnag refutes allegations, clarifies circumstances surrounding patient’s death

Anantnag : Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has issued a detailed clarification in response to allegations of medical negligence following the death of a patient, assuring that the matter will be investigated and any lapse will invite action.

According to the statement issued by Dr Showkat Hussain Tali, Media Coordinator GMC Anantnag, the patient was admitted to the Medicine Department on Friday, August 8, 2025, and later shifted to the Department of Surgery on Saturday for a suspected surgical abdomen. On Sunday evening, the patient was moved to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis, history of chronic substance exposure, multi-organ failure, and a rapidly deteriorating clinical condition.

The hospital stated that upon arrival in SICU, doctors and nursing staff faced difficulty in management due to the patient’s extremely aggressive behavior, a situation also witnessed by attendants of other patients. Despite being uncooperative, the patient was managed as per standard medical protocol.

During the stay in SICU, the patient developed severe hypoxia, for which timely intubation and ventilation were initiated. However, the patient later suffered cardiopulmonary arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed, but despite efforts by the attending doctors and staff, the patient could not be revived.

The hospital further claimed that after the patient’s death, attendants resorted to aggressive behavior, damaging doors and furniture, and forcing SICU staff to exit through a safe passage for their security.

GMC Anantnag assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that any dereliction of duty would be dealt with strictly as per rules. It reiterated its commitment to serving the public within available resources and urged citizens to submit any complaints directly to the administration for action against erring staff.

The statement also requested the public to refrain from circulating images or videos of hospital premises or patient care areas on social media without prior permission, warning that legal action may be initiated against violators. [KNT]
