Traffic Restored on Jammu–Poonch Highway After Landslide Disruption

Rajouri: Traffic movement on the vital Jammu–Poonch National Highway was restored earlier today after a massive rainfall and landslides had forced its closure in the Kalal area of Nowshera in Rajouri district. The highway, a lifeline for the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, was blocked on Monday evening following heavy rainfall that triggered the sudden collapse of a hillside, sending mud and debris tumbling onto the road.

The landslide had brought traffic to a complete standstill, stranding commuters and cutting off surface connectivity between several areas. In response, the local administration, aided by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and police, swiftly initiated clearance operations. Heavy machinery was pressed into service late last night and work continued through the early hours of Tuesday to remove the debris.

Officials confirmed to the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the road was reopened for light vehicular traffic by morning today after the affected stretch was cleared and inspected for safety. Restoration of the highway has brought much-needed relief to residents, transporters, and travelers who depend on this key route for movement of goods and essential services.

While traffic has resumed, officials have warned of intermittent disruptions if rains continue over the coming days. Teams remain stationed at key landslide-prone points to respond swiftly in case of any further road blockages. [KNT]
