Parliamentary Panel Led by Anurag Thakur to Visit Pahalgam, Security, Development, and Impact on Tourism on Agenda

Srinagar: In the wake of the attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley that left 26 civilians dead, a Parliamentary Standing Committee is set to visit the affected region in what will be the first high-level official tour since the tragedy. The visit aims to review the ground situation, assess the security response, and evaluate the broader impact of the attack on civilian life and tourism in Kashmir.

The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel, headed by senior BJP MP Anurag Thakur, will undertake a multi-state study tour. The Committee will also visit Srinagar, Jammu, and Pahalgam.

Official sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the committee’s Kashmir itinerary will commence in Jammu, where members will engage in preliminary meetings with top administrative officials. During their stay, the delegation is also expected to pay obeisance at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine before boarding the Vande Bharat Express to Srinagar.

In Srinagar, the committee will hold a series of meetings focused on regional development, the prevailing security landscape, and the ripple effects of militancy on everyday life, particularly in the tourism sector, which has suffered a setback after the Pahalgam attack.

The visit will culminate in a ground inspection of the attack site in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam.

To facilitate coordination and logistics for the high-profile visit, the J&K government has appointed S.P. Rukwal, Director of Geology and Mining, as the official nodal officer. [KNT]
