‘Harmukh’ Launches in Srinagar: First-Ever Kashmiri-Kannada Film Celebrates Cultural Unity and Artistic Brilliance

News Desk

Srinagar, 26 May 2025:In a historic milestone for Kashmiri cinema, the much-anticipated feature film Harmukh was officially launched today at a vibrant event held in Srinagar. Marked by the unveiling of its songs, trailer, and print material, the occasion stood as a powerful celebration of artistic excellence and cultural unity — with Harmukh becoming the first feature film ever made in both Kashmiri and Kannada languages.

The launch was graced by prominent dignitaries including Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, who attended as Chief Guest. The event also witnessed the presence of Mr. Adeel Saleem, Additional Secretary of the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, and Mr. Saif-u-din Bhat, MLA from Khan Sahib Constituency, as Guests of Honour.

Addressing the audience, producer and lead actor Dr. Ayash Arif called Harmukh “a dream, a bridge, and a bond” between Kashmir and Karnataka. He described the film as a heartfelt tribute to friendship that transcends boundaries — narrating the emotional journey of two culturally distinct families who come to embrace each other with empathy and love.

The story, penned by acclaimed South Indian filmmaker Ashok Cashyap, artfully blends the mystique of Kashmir with the warmth of Karnataka. Rooted in human connection, the film moves beyond geography and language to deliver a universal message of compassion and unity.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani emphasized the importance of showcasing the real soul of Kashmir. “There is a tremendous need to portray the hospitality, warmth, and humanity of Kashmir to the global audience,” he noted. “Harmukh appears to do exactly that — capturing the compassionate spirit that defines our land.” He further hailed the film as a cultural ambassador, capable of promoting a positive narrative about the Valley and acting as a catalyst for the tourism sector.

The trailer of Harmukh captivated the audience with its cinematic beauty and emotional depth, while the soul-stirring soundtrack, composed by the legendary Wahid Jeelani, added another layer of richness to the narrative. Performances by the cast — led by Dr. Ayash Arif and veteran filmmaker-actor T. S. Nagabharana — received high praise for their authenticity and emotional resonance.

T. S. Nagabharana, a titan of Indian cinema with 16 national and state awards, brings profound dignity and gravitas to his role, while Dr. Arif’s heartfelt portrayal adds depth and sincerity. Their on-screen chemistry forms the emotional core of the film, making Harmukh a cinematic experience both moving and memorable.

Adding to the cultural fervour of the evening was a live performance by renowned Kashmiri folk artist Fayaz Shilvati, whose stirring vocals echoed the Valley’s musical heritage and left the audience visibly moved.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Zahoor Zahid, Production Designer of Harmukh, expressed gratitude to the audience and extended heartfelt appreciation to the film’s writer-director Ashok Cashyap. “Your story has united two cultures in a shared language of love and humanity,” he said.

The film has been jointly produced by Dr. Ayash Arif, Mushtaq Wani, Masarat Kanji, and Ashok Kumar K — with every member of the cast and crew contributing to what many described as a cinematic milestone. As Harmukh readies for release, hopes are high that the film will set a new benchmark in regional cinema and emerge as a symbol of harmony, artistic excellence, and cross-cultural storytelling.
