Pakistan continues small arms, artillery fire along LoC; ‘Responded proportionately,’ says Indian Army

Jammu,May 08: Pakistani troops continued small arms and artillery fire along the Line of Control in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and some parts of the Kashmir Valley on Thursday, a day after Poonch and Rajouri districts witnessed intense cross-border shelling following an Indian strike on terrorist infrastructure.

“During the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using Small Arms and Artillery Guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor areas in J&K,” the Army said on Thursday morning. “The Indian Army responded proportionately,” it added.

Officials said that Pakistan opened artillery and small arms fire in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara on Wednesday night. The shelling continued on Thursday morning. “We were already taking shelter in underground bunkers. However, this time, not many shells landed in inhabited areas,” a villager said.

Officials said that the Pakistani soldiers also violated the ceasefire agreement in the Nowgam sector of Kupwara using small arms and artillery.

In north Kashmir’s Baramulla, Pakistani troops fired artillery at different villages in the Uri sector. However, there was no report of any loss of life or injury. On Wednesday, 15 civilians were injured in different villages of Uri, mostly in Salamabad.

Hours after India suspended the Indus Water Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed on April 22, Pakistani troops have been resorting to unprovoked firing and shelling every night.

Initially confined to small arms along the LoC, the firing escalated to artillery fire on Wednesday. Thirteen people, including a soldier, were killed in the day-long shelling in Poonch and Rajouri districts on Wednesday. Many houses and government office buildings were damaged, forcing several locals to shift from Poonch town and move to safer places.
