Lok Sabha Takes Up Waqf (Amendment) Bill for Consideration and Passing

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday took up the Waqf (Amendment) Bill for consideration and passing, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah defending the government’s approach towards legislative scrutiny.

During the debate, Amit Shah responded to the opposition’s concerns about the bill and the role of parliamentary committees in legislative processes. He emphasized that the present government follows a democratic approach in committee deliberations, unlike the past practices of the Congress.

“It was your (opposition) insistence that a Joint Parliamentary Committee should be formed. We do not have a committee like the Congress. We have a democratic committee, which brainstorms. ‘Congress ke zamane mein committee hoti thi jo thappa lagati thi’. Our committee discusses, deliberates on the basis of discussions and makes changes. If the changes are not to be accepted, then what is the point of the committee?” Shah stated.

The bill aims to amend provisions related to the management and regulation of waqf properties in the country. The discussion saw sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with both sides presenting their views on the proposed amendments.

The government maintains that the bill seeks to streamline the administration of waqf properties, ensuring better transparency and efficiency. However, opposition members have raised concerns regarding certain provisions, demanding further deliberation.(KNS)
