4.26 lakh MT legacy waste bio-remediated, 33 segregation machines operational: Govt

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday said it has successfully bio-remediated 4.26 lakh metric tons of legacy waste dumped at various landfill sites across the Union Territory.

In a written response to a question of MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz in the Assembly, chief minister Omar Abdullah, who happens to be in-charge of the Housing and Urban Development department, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), informed that currently, 33 Mechanical Segregation Machines are operational in J&K for effective waste management.

He assured that additional machines are being procured under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) as per the approved plan, following the proper procurement process.

So far, 4.26 lakh metric tons of legacy waste dumped at open landfill sites across various districts of the Union Territory has been successfully bio-remediated, as per the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2016—(KNO)
