Supreme Court Issues Notice on Plea for Bar Council in J&K

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Union of India and the Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in response to a plea filed by the ‘Kashmir Advocates Association’ under Article 32, seeking the establishment of a Bar Council in Jammu & Kashmir.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta briefly heard Advocate Javed Shaikh before issuing the notice, returnable within four weeks. Shaikh emphasized the absence of a Bar Council in the Union Territory, affecting various legal functions currently handled by the High Court.
While Shaikh sought interim relief regarding welfare tickets meant to be published at the Bar Council’s request, Justice Nath declined, stating the existing system would continue until further orders. Justice Mehta also questioned the interim request, noting concerns about fund allocation in the absence of a Bar Council. [KNT]
