Mumbai: Nirupa Roy is remembered as an actress who gave a new dimension to the role of mother with her excellent acting.
Nirupa Roy, whose real name was Kokila, was born on January 4, 1931, in a middle-class family in Balsad, Gujarat. Her father was a railway employee.
She studied up to the fourth standard and then married Kamal Roy in Mumbai. After marriage, Nirupa Roy also came to Mumbai. At that time, filmmaker and director BM Vyas was looking for new faces for his new film Ranak Devi. He advertised in a newspaper for new actors for his film.
Nirupa Roy’s husband was very fond of films and wanted to become an actor.
Kamal Roy along with his wife went to meet BM Vyas and expressed his desire to become an actor but BM Vyas flatly refused saying that he did not have any qualities as an actor. But if he wanted, his wife could get a job as an actress in the film.
Similarly, in the film Ranak Devi, Nirupa Roy started working for Rs 150 per month but later she was separated from this film.
