Lok Sabha postponed One Nation, One Election bills; focus on financial business

The government today postponed the introduction of bills related to ‘One Nation, One Election’ in the Lok Sabha, according to the revised list of business issued on Sunday.

The two bills — Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill were earlier scheduled for introduction on Monday (December 16), as per the initial list of business released on Friday. However, the bills have now been removed from the agenda for the day.

The reason behind the government’s decision to delay the introduction of these bills remains unclear.

Government sources indicate that the bills may be introduced later this week, following the completion of financial business, including the passage of the first batch of supplementary demands for grants, which are listed for discussion on Monday.

Despite their removal from Monday’s schedule, the government retains the option of bringing in legislative proposals through ‘Supplementary List of Business’ with the Speaker’s permission.

The two bills, aimed at facilitating simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, were circulated among Members of Parliament last week in accordance with parliamentary procedures.

The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on December 4, is set to conclude on December 20.
