Shamim Firdous calls for Parental Vigilance to combat Substance Abuse

Srinagar: Shamim Firdous, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Habba Kadal and President Women’s wing National Conference Jammu & Kashmir Monday expressed deep concern over the rising substance abuse issue in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly among young girls.

The MLA emphasized that while the government is taking measures to address the problem, it is crucial for citizens to take responsibility for curbing the menace.

Firdous urged parents to be vigilant about their children’s activities, friendships, and acquaintances, as prevention is key. This concern is especially relevant given the alarming rate at which substance abuse is spreading in the region.

She said that the issue of young girls and women in Jammu and Kashmir turning to drugs as a coping mechanism for social issues, harassment, domestic violence and relationship problems is indeed alarming.

Firdous highlighted that many are unaware of the de-addiction process and available resources.

To combat this issue, the MLA has appealed to civil society, religious leaders, media persons and educators to provide counseling and support to youth. This call to action emphasizes the need for expanded rehabilitation facilities, increasing access to treatment centers.

She also stressed on public awareness campaigns, educating the public, especially youth, about addiction and resources, disrupting the drug supply chain, targeting drug networks to curb distribution, focusing on support and recovery rather than punishment.
