Cop selling drugs arrested in Jammu, Suspended

Jammu: To make quick bucks, a policeman was found selling drugs in the premises of Government Medical College Jammu. Luck didn’t favor him and a police party from Police Post GMC Jammu arrested him red-handed.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the accused Selection Grade Constable routinely turned up in the premises of Medical College and sold the narcotics to drug addicts.

The tainted cop has been identified as Mukhtiyar Shah, a resident of Geloti area of Udhampur district and, he is currently affiliated with the 12th Battalion of Armed Police at Zewan, Srinagar.

Police seized his motorcycle (JK02BW- 1950) shortly after his arrest when they recovered a 15-gram heroin-like substance and Rs 9,000 from his possession.

A police official confirmed the arrest of the tainted cop and told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that a formal FIR (155/2024) in this regard has been registered at Police Station Bakshi Nagar. He added that Mukhtiyar is part of a drug syndicate that is active in Jammu and is selling drugs to naïve youth to maximize profits and also this syndicate is responsible for overdose deaths due to drug consumption.

“The accused cop is under custody and has been suspended,” the police official said, adding that he is currently residing at Raipure Beli Gharana area of Jammu.

Notably, this is the second policeman arrested on charges of drug peddling. Earlier, a Selection Grade Constable Perwaiz Iqbal, a resident of Gujjar Mohalla Janipur was arrested along with his two wives after 33 grams of Heroin was recovered from their possession. The tainted cop was posted in Crime Branch Jammu.

SDPO City West Jammu, Dr Satish Bhardwaj who was recently conferred with the Home Ministers medal for excellence in Investigation have been pursuing a ‘Zero Tolerance Policy’ against drug peddlers.

The official revealed that a financial investigation is currently underway to uncover the extent of properties acquired by these rogue individuals, referred to as ‘black sheep’.

“With the arrest of these two cops within a span of a couple of days makes it clear that nobody is above the law,” the official said. [KNT]
