Sajad Lone Expresses Strong Support for Resolutions on Article 370, Calls for Unambiguous Stand against Aug 5, 2019 Events

Srinagar: People’s Conference Chairman Sajad Lone today expressed his support for recent resolutions in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly aimed at addressing the impact of the August 5, 2019, constitutional changes and restoring Article 370 and 35A, as well as the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Lone said his party’s unwavering stance on these critical issues and the importance of clear, united opposition to the changes implemented in 2019.

In a tweet posted on social media’s X platform, Lone said that his party backed resolutions moved by both the PDP and the National Conference (NC). Though neither the PDP’s proposal nor the NC resolution was circulated in advance, Lone said his party still chose to support them as they resonated with the People’s Conference’s core demands: restoring Article 370, regaining statehood, and rejecting what he described as “the majoritarian onslaught” against the region.

He said on the importance of the Assembly, the first elected body in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 changes, in representing the voice and aspirations of the region’s people. He stated, “This Assembly is the most powerful and relevant institution in the context of August 5, 2019.” Resolutions passed by the body, he argued, carry not only political and moral weight but also potential legal implications in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, he noted a need for greater precision in the language of these resolutions, cautioning that ambiguity could allow for varying interpretations. He urged the Assembly to express “disdain and contempt” for the events of August 5, 2019, unequivocally and to push for the full reversal of changes enacted that day.

“Beyond supporting the resolutions, his party has also proposed amendments to the Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s address, calling for explicit condemnation of the 2019 constitutional changes,” he said adding he expressed hope that these amendments would gain traction within the Assembly to solidify a clear stance on the issue—(KNO)
