Mumbai: Famous Bollywood actress Hema Malini has turned 76 today. Born on 16 October 1948 in Amankundi, Tamil Nadu, Hema Malini’s mother Jaya Chakraborty was a film producer. Hema completed her primary education from Chennai. In the year 1961, Hema Malini got an opportunity to work as a dancer in a short play Pandav Vanavasam. In 1968, Hema Malini got the opportunity to work for the first time with Raj Kapoor in Sapnoen Ka Saudagar.

During the promotion of the film, Hema Malini was promoted as a dream girl. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office but Hema Malini as an actress was loved by the audience. Hema Malini’s first success came in 1970 with the film Johnny Meera Naam. It starred actor Dev Anand in the lead role with him. The duo of Hema and Dev Anand in the film was highly appreciated by the audience and the film was a super hit. After that, Hema Malini mesmerized the audience with her performance in Ramesh Sippy’s film Andaaz, released in 1971.

She was also awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her outstanding performance in this film. When Hema Malini made her debut in the film industry, Sridhar, a Tamil director, refused to give her a role in his film saying that she did not have the star appeal.
Later in the seventies, the same producer and director took advantage of his popularity and made the film ‘Gehri Chaal’ with him in 1973. Hema Malini’s pairing with Dharmendra was a huge hit on the silver screen. This film duo first came into limelight with the movie Sharafat. In the 1975 film Sholay, Dharmendra entertained the audience as Veeru and Hema Malini Basanti. Became a dream girl. The duo later worked together in films like Dream Girl, Charas, Razia Sultan, Ali Baba Chalis Chor, The Burning Train, Dost etc. In the seventies, Hema Malini was accused of only playing glamorous roles, but she silenced her critics forever with serious roles in films like Khushboo, Kanara and Mera. Malini was so impressed by her beauty and acting that producer Pramod Chakraborty made the film Dream Girl with her.
In 1990, Hema Malini moved to the small screen and directed the serial Nupur, followed by the production and direction of the film Dil Ashna Hai with actor Shah Rukh Khan in 1992. In 1995, she Produced and directed Mohini for the small screen. After playing several roles in films, Hema Malini entered politics for social service. Hema Malini was honoured with the Padma Shri Award in the year 2000. Hema Malini acted in nearly 150 films in her four-decade-long film career. Hema Malini has reached the Parliament after winning the election from Mathura parliamentary seat on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.
