Congress says High Command to choose CLP leader in J&K, submits letter of support to NC

Aim to strengthen INDIA alliance, focus on combating BJP’s policies: Tariq Karra

Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra announced on Friday that the central leadership will decide the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in J&K.

Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters here, Karra, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “We have unanimously decided to grant authority to the central leadership to choose our leader in Jammu & Kashmir.” He also confirmed that the party has submitted a letter of support to the National Conference (NC).

When asked about Congress’s demands from its alliance partner NC, Karra replied, “We have no particular demands. Keeping the spirit of the INDIA alliance alive, we are extending our support to NC.”

He called for a collaborative governance model, saying, “We will first have an official discussion with NC and wait for the outcome.”

Karra reiterated that the Congress’s fight against the BJP is not about minor issues but aims at addressing larger concerns. “Our motive is to combat the menace of BJP and its hate politics that have been prevalent in the country,” he asserted.

Earlier, the J&K Congress chief said that a resolution would be sent to the party high command in New Delhi. “We have six members, and the party high command will decide the roles within the coalition government with the National Conference,” he said.

Notably, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, who was elected as the legislature party head by newly elected assembly members of the party, said they were awaiting the letter of support from Congress. Once received, they plan to meet Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha to stake their claim for government formation.

The NC and Congress entered a pre-poll alliance for the assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, with NC winning 42 seats and Congress securing six. Four independent candidates have extended their support to the National Conference
