In a X post, Srinagar Police said, “Apropos to social media assertion by certain quarters that thousands of people are lying in the jails, it’s stated that few mischievous elements with past conduct & proclivity of disrupting electoral process & having criminal antecedents are being dealt & bound down,”

“The preventive sections of law provide law enforcement agencies security for keeping peace and good behavior. Legal measures are being taken to ensure a free and fair electoral process,” the post read.

The police urged citizens to disregard these baseless claims and refrain from spreading misinformation.

“We appeal to the public to refrain from any credence to such unfounded and spurious assertions.”

The clarification comes amid social media assertions about mass arrests, which Srinagar Police has denied.
