Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: A Powerless Legislature?

By ASRAR ALI

The upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections have ignited a fierce political battle, but beneath the surface, a harsh reality lurks. The elected representatives will have limited authority, while the Lieutenant Governor (LG) wields significant power. This has led to a scramble among politicians and bureaucrats seeking employment and influence.

Since the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir’s governance structure has undergone a significant shift. The LG, appointed by the Central Government, now holds substantial authority, rendering the Assembly relatively powerless. This has created a situation where elected representatives will require LG’s approval for even minor decisions.

Former politicians, now without a role, are eager to secure employment and relevance. Retired bureaucrats, driven by a desire for power, are joining the fray. Seasoned politicians are reduced to begging for votes, while others switch parties if not given a mandate. Big political parties have formed alliances despite ideological differences, highlighting the lengths to which they will go to gain power.

Campaign promises range from free electricity to free rations, job security, and prisoner releases. However, these pledges ring hollow, considering the limited authority of the Assembly. The fact remains that these politicians are cut from the same cloth, and their ability to deliver on promises is questionable.

For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, these elections have become mere entertainment, a spectacle to observe from the sidelines. For the contestants, however, this is a game-changing opportunity. The real question remains: will the elected representatives be able to deliver on their promises, or will they be reduced to mere figureheads?

The election’s outcome will shape Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, but the underlying power dynamics will remain unchanged. The LG’s authority will continue to overshadow the Assembly, rendering its decisions ineffective. As the region navigates this complex landscape, one thing is clear: the true test of leadership lies ahead.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections have exposed the harsh realities of politics in the region. With power concentrated in the LG’s hands, the elected representatives will face significant challenges in delivering on their promises. As the people watch the electoral drama unfold, they must consider the long-term implications of this powerless legislature.
