ULLAS aims for 100% literacy and mass movement through Literacy Week Celebrations: CEO Srinagar

Srinagar: In order to raise awareness among all stakeholders about the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakaram, a ‘Literacy Week’, running from September 1 to September 8, 2024, is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across all schools in District Srinagar.

ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakaram is a pivotal initiative dedicated to enhancing literacy and education in the region.

On Day 2nd today, the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Srinagar, Shabina Keysar, spearheaded a grand awareness program at the Boys Higher Secondary School Gulabbagh, which saw the participation of key educational leaders and community members.

The event was attended by Showkat Hussain, DNO ULLAS; Oscia Jabeen Baba, Principal of BHSS Gulabbagh; Ghulam Hassan Lone, Zonal Education Officer Gulabbagh; educators, students and local community members.

During her address, CEO emphasized the importance of ULLAS in alignment with the New Education Policy 2020. “As responsible citizens of District Srinagar, we have a duty to ensure that not a single person is left behind, and we achieve 100 percent literacy,” she stated.

“We are committed to ensure that every citizen has access to essential literacy skills and through literacy week celebrations we hope ULLAS will become a mass movement in Srinagar,” she added. She applauded the enthusiastic participation from students, staff, and community members.

Oscia Jabeen, the Principal of BHSS Gulabbagh, highlighted that ULLAS specifically targets citizens aged 15 and above who have missed the opportunity of formal schooling. “By reaching out to this demographic, the program aims to extend education and literacy to marginalized sections of society,” she added.

Nazrana, Coordinator threw light on the ULLAS initiative through volunteerism. She encouraged individuals to participate as “Duty or Kartavya Bodh” towards nation-building, emphasizing the crucial role volunteers play in spreading knowledge and education across communities in India.

Students also shared their perspectives on the ULLAS initiative. Shahbaz and Atofa, both Class 11 students, expressed their belief that ULLAS is a “ray of hope for all” and that it is the responsibility of every student to ensure that every deserving individual in their family receives the education they need through this program.

To culminate the day’s events, a rally was held from BHSS Gulabbagh, which passed through the locality and concluded in the school lawn. During the rally, students proudly held placards and banners depicting the aims, objectives, and importance of ULLAS for society, showcasing their commitment to the cause of literacy.
