Carlos Alcaraz, the third seed and 2022 US Open champion, faced a surprising challenge from Australian qualifier Li Tu in the first round on Tuesday. Despite dropping the second set, Alcaraz regained his composure to secure a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Tu, who returned to tennis after a six-year hiatus, impressed with his determination and skill, pushing Alcaraz to raise his game. The Spaniard praised Tu’s performance, saying, “He started the match a little nervous, but after the first set, he grew up and started to play great tennis. I’m going to follow him and his results because I’m pretty sure I’ll be seeing him around very soon.”
Alcaraz’s power and endurance eventually wore down Tu in the hot and humid conditions, allowing him to claim the win and set up a second-round meeting with Botic van de Zandschulp. The 21-year-old showed no signs of limitation from a recent right ankle injury, moving freely around the court.
The match showcased Alcaraz’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity, a crucial asset as he seeks to defend his US Open title.
