After Er Rashid, Sarjan Barkati to Contest Assembly Polls from Jail

Daughter to Lead Campaign

Srinagar: Following the precedent set by jailed politician Er Rashid, whose son Abrar Rashid led his Lok Sabha campaign, Sarjan Barkati, known as “Azadi Chacha” is set to contest the upcoming assembly elections from jail.

Barkati’s nomination form has been filed by his daughter, who is expected to spearhead the campaign on behalf of her incarcerated father.

Barkati gained notoriety for leading large gatherings and rallies during the 2016 unrest in Kashmir, with his slogans and speeches.

On 28 August last year, Barkati was arrested for orchestrating a fund-raising campaign and was accused of misusing the funds for radical activities in Kashmir.(KNS)
