Dry spell triggers to a gastroenteritis outbreak Outbreak in South Kashmir

Kulgam: The prolonged dry spell and intense heatwave have led to a gastroenteritis outbreak in various areas of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Despite the outbreak, the situation is under control, with no patients currently hospitalized.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Kulgam, Dr. Saba Wani, explained that gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu, is an infection of the digestive system characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and occasionally fever.

It spreads rapidly through contaminated food or water and person-to-person contact.
Last week, 15 cases were reported from Kewa village in Qazigund, but all patients have been stabilized and discharged. Currently, 3 to 4 new cases are being reported daily, which is considered normal.

Dr. Wani reassured the public, urging them to remain calm, drink plenty of warm water, and maintain cleanliness to prevent further spread. (KNS)
