Srinagar: The Annual Amarnath Yatra commenced on Saturday morning with the first batch of pilgrims departing from the twin base camps in Baltal and Nunwan to embark on their journey to the sacred 3,880-metre-high cave shrine nestled in the south Kashmir Himalayas.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the commencement of the pilgrimage, highlighting its cultural and spiritual significance.
“The Shri Amarnath Yatra is an eternal symbol of the tradition and continuity of Indian culture. This divine journey is starting from today. I extend my best wishes to all the devotees for the darshan and worship of Baba,” Shah stated..
He also emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring a seamless and secure pilgrimage under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“In line with Prime Minister leadership, our government is committed to ensuring a safe, smooth, and pleasant journey for the devotees and has made every possible arrangement to prevent any inconvenience to them,” Shah affirmed.
Meanwhile in response to the massive influx of pilgrims and potential security threats, an extensive security apparatus has been deployed.
Security agencies have instituted a multi-tiered security system, incorporating advanced technology and a substantial manpower presence. Key measures include the installation of CCTV cameras, deployment of snipers, utilization of drone systems, and the presence of bomb disposal squads, dog squads, and counter-IED equipment.
A senior security official stated, “To safeguard the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine in the Himalayas of south Kashmir, the security apparatus has instituted a multi-tier security system, deploying Special Forces along the dual routes of the Amarnath Yatra”.
The successful coordination of various stakeholders has been pivotal in enhancing the security and efficiency of the pilgrimage. This coalition includes the Administration, Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), Police, other security forces, and relevant departments. These entities have joined forces to bolster security and manage the pilgrimage effectively.
Sources have confirmed the deployment of high-powered bulletproof vehicles at critical sites. These vehicles, along with security personnel, are tasked with detecting explosives and ensuring a secure environment for the pilgrims. Additionally, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) will are stationed to undertake rescue and relief operations as necessary.
The Amarnath Yatra, an annual pilgrimage that attracts lakhs of devotees during the ‘Shravani Mela’ in July-August, follows two primary routes – the traditional 48-km-long Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter, steeper 14-km-long Baltal route in Ganderbal district. This year’s pilgrimage is set to conclude on August 19.
The Amarnath Shrine Board oversees the daily allocation of pilgrims, while the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has devised a comprehensive security blueprint for those traveling along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).
Located 141 km from the capital Srinagar at an altitude of 12,756 feet above sea level, the holy cave of Amarnath lies in the Ladar Valley, which is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains for most of the year. This geographical remoteness adds to the spiritual allure of the shrine, making the successful execution of the Yatra a testament to the dedication and coordination of the authorities involved.(KNS)
