MMABM Hospital Anantnag Performs Complex Surgery for Tonsillopharyngeal Carcinoma

Asian Mail

Anantnag: In a testament to medical expertise, the Department of ENT at MMABM Hospital Anantnag successfully performed a complex surgical procedure to remove an extensive right-sided tonsillopharyngeal mass from a 73-year-old male patient with a history of tobacco use. The surgery was particularly challenging due to the mass’s extensive involvement and the significant anesthetic difficulties it posed.

In a statement issued to Asian Mail, Spokesperson of GMC Anantnag said, “The patient presented with a carcinoma extending from the right faucial pillar, involving the base of the tongue, valecula, posterior oropharynx, and medially crossing the midline,”

“The mass displaced the epiglottis and abutted the airway up to the right vocal cord, with epiglottic invasion and necrosis. The mass’s friability and tendency to bleed easily upon manipulation added to the complexity,” he added.

Given the limited space for laryngoscopy and the patient’s compromised airway, Dr. Anjum Shamim, HOD Anesthesia at GMC Anantnag, performed an awake intubation using a video laryngoscope. The patient, who also had a left bundle branch block (LBBB), was classified as high-risk, necessitating thorough preoperative assessment and consent for both high-risk surgery and potential tracheostomy.

The surgical team, led by consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr. Salman Khurshid and assisted by Dr. Pervaiz Reshi, Dr. Sumer Bashir, and Mr. Reyaz, meticulously removed the mass en bloc, ensuring a clean margin. The patient is recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery.

This successful surgical intervention highlights the expertise and dedication of the medical team at MMABM Hospital Anantnag in handling complex cases and providing high-quality care to patients.

Prof. (Dr) Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal of GMC Anantnag, lauded the team’s efforts, stating, “This successful procedure is a testament to the exceptional skill and dedication of our medical professionals. The complexity of this case required precise coordination and expertise from both our surgical and anesthetic teams. We are proud of their commitment to delivering high-quality patient care under such challenging circumstances.” Dr. Muzaffar Sherwani, Medical Superintendent AH-GMC Anantnag also commended the surgical and anesthetic teams for their outstanding performance, highlighting this as a significant achievement for the hospital.
