Jakarta: Indonesia’s Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said on Tuesday that the number of local poll administrators who reportedly died from exhaustion increased to 84.

The minister said that he obtained the figure from the country’s General Election Commission and the Elections Supervisory Agency between last Wednesday and Sunday.

Indonesia conducted its single-day presidential and legislative elections last Wednesday.

Sadikin added that the death percentage of poll workers in the 2024 elections was 74 percent lower than in the 2019 elections where hundreds of election staff died.

Around 6.8 million election staff in the 2024 elections, he said, had gone through medical screening and 6.4 million workers were declared healthy. Meanwhile, 400,000 others were classified as high risk.

“The highest risk is hypertension. Many have this. The second is heart diseases,” he said, adding that the screening activity had helped reduce the death percentage of poll administrators in the 2024 elections.
