Rubia’s Cocoon Artistry Initiative: A tale of “White Revolution” from Poonch to Kanyakumari

Jammu: Not just a lecturer and In-Charge of the Department of Sericulture, but also the Campus Officer, Dr. Rubia Bukhari, from picturesque district of Poonch of Jammu and Kashmir, who has breathed new life into the fading art of cocoon farming with “White Revolution”.

Recognizing the dwindling interest among farmers, largely due to inadequate financial returns, Dr. Bukhari embarked on a transformative journey.

Driven by a desire to revive cocoon cultivation, Dr. Bukhari initiated the Cocoon Art and Craft project.

Expressing hope, Dr. Bukhari emphasizes the importance of raising awareness among farmers about the Cocoon Craft initiative. She envisions that proper implementation of this initiative can significantly boost the financial income of farmers associated with cocoon cultivation.

During a farmer training program organized by Poonch Campus, she observed the waning enthusiasm and decided to utilize rough cocoons, which typically sell for a mere Rs 300 per kg, to create intricate crafts.

The response to her initiative was overwhelmingly positive, catching the attention of the Department of Sericulture J&K.

They promptly placed orders for Cocoon Craft articles, recognizing the potential of Dr. Bukhari’s unique approach.

Grateful for the support from the Director of Sericulture, J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, she believes that tapping into this potential can restore the lost glory of cocoon production in Jammu and Kashmir.

In her words she says, “Director Sericulture J&K appreciated my efforts in making Cocoon Craft from defective cocoons. With proper promotion, farmers can generate substantial income from this initiative.”

Dr. Bukhari stands as a beacon of hope, breathing new life into a traditional craft and paving the way for a brighter future for cocoon farming in the region.

Notably, she recently secured an order for these crafts to be presented as mementos at an international conference, further highlighting the growing recognition of her work.

In September, Dr. Bukhari, along with Poonch Campus students, held an exhibition at Bhaderwah Campus during Sangam-2023.

The event garnered praise from dignitaries, students, and the public, drawing attention from both local and national media outlets.

Dr. Bukhari’s vision extends beyond borders, aiming to take her Cocoon Craft initiative, aptly named the “White Revolution,” from Poonch to Kanyakumari. Her aspiration aligns seamlessly with the ideals of Atmanirbhar Bharat, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She not only dreams of contributing to this self-reliant vision but also aims to embody the spirit of Nari Shakti, showcasing the strength and determination of a girl from the border district of Poonch.

Dr Bukhari’s dedication serves as a testament to the transformative power of initiatives that blend tradition with innovation, proving that even the simplest elements, like a cocoon, can weave a story of resilience, empowerment, and national pride.
