Polls begin for Taiwan leadership, legislature elections

Taipei: Taiwan residents began voting in the island’s leadership and legislature elections at 8 a.m. Saturday and the polls will close at 4 p.m.

Each eligible voter will cast one ballot for the leadership election, while two votes will be cast for the legislature election, one for a candidate representing the voter’s electoral district and the other for a political party, according to the island’s electoral affairs agency.

Three pairs of candidates have registered for the region’s leadership election, namely Hou Yu-ih and Jaw Shaw-kong representing the Chinese Kuomintang party, Ko Wen-je and Wu Hsin-ying representing the Taiwan People’s Party, as well as Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim representing the Democratic Progressive Party.

The island’s legislature has 113 seats, including 73 directly elected regional seats.

Voting results are expected to be announced late Saturday, according to the electoral affairs agency.
