Taipei: Taiwan residents began voting in the island’s leadership and legislature elections at 8 a.m. Saturday and the polls will close at 4 p.m.

Each eligible voter will cast one ballot for the leadership election, while two votes will be cast for the legislature election, one for a candidate representing the voter’s electoral district and the other for a political party, according to the island’s electoral affairs agency.

Three pairs of candidates have registered for the region’s leadership election, namely Hou Yu-ih and Jaw Shaw-kong representing the Chinese Kuomintang party, Ko Wen-je and Wu Hsin-ying representing the Taiwan People’s Party, as well as Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim representing the Democratic Progressive Party.

The island’s legislature has 113 seats, including 73 directly elected regional seats.
