Russian ambassador to Serbia arrives for meet with Vucic amid protests in Belgrade

Belgrade: Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko has arrived for a meeting with President Aleksandar Vucic amid protests in Belgrade, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic thanked the Russian intelligence services for information about the impending unrest in the country’s capital.

At about 9 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT), the Russian Embassy’s car arrived at the entrance to the residence of the president of Serbia, which is not far from the National Assembly building where unrest took place the day before.

On Sunday, supporters of the Serbian opposition, who disagree with the results of the recent snap elections, surrounded the National Assembly in Belgrade, climbing the steps and trying to break down the doors, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

The police also used tear gas against a crowd of demonstrators who tried to break into the building.

Later, police dispersed protesters from the square within minutes and set up a cordon.
