Mumbai: The rupee on Friday gained eight paise at 83.31 in the opening session against the US dollar, which is sold by bankers and exporters, dealers at the Foreign Exchange said.

The domestic unit surged owing to a weak dollar against other world currencies amid a robust equity market in opening trade.

The rupee recorded intraday highs and lows at 83.29 and 83.34, respectively, the dealer added.
