Locals Stage Protest Against Drinking Water Paucity in Batamaloo

Srinagar: Locals of Batamaloo on Monday staged a protest at Rekh Chowk against the paucity of drinking water in their area for more than a week.

The protesters, mostly women, assembled at the Rekh Chowk junction and blocked all the roads at the spot while demanding the resumption of drinking water to the area. “The water has been stopped for the last 10 days. We are not able to do anything without the water. Our children are not going to schools and even the elderly people are not able to pray salah in the absence of water,” said a protesting woman.

They further alleged that the issues pertaining to lack of drinking water have been faced by them since their childhood. “None of the areas here have drinking water,” said protesting women while raising slogans against the Jal Shakti Department.

“We have been without water here for several days now. Even the water tanker is not being sent to the area. We just want only an uninterrupted tap water and nothing else,” said one of the protesters.

During the protest, not a single vehicle was allowed by the protesters to pass from the Rekh Chowk junction, which is an important spot as it connects multiple interior roads of Batamaloo and even helps in passing of traffic from adjacent Tengpora bypass and PCR route.

As the protest was not showing any sign of let-up, the demand for an immediate resumption of drinking water to the area was vehemently reiterated by protesting women.
