Heatwave to abate from Monday amidst appeals for summer vacation to schools goes shriller

Srinagar, June 23: Expressing concern over the health of their children amid the sweltering heatwave, the Parents have urged the government to pre-pone summer vacations with an immediate effect for school-going kids.

Kashmir Valley is witnessing scorching heat with temp above 34 degrees Celsius.

Parents said that they were expecting an announcement for summer vacation from the government even as the Kashmir Valley recorded the season’s hottest day at 34 degrees Celsius – the 2nd warmest day in June in a decade.

“Instead of declaring summer vacation for school-going children, the Education Department issued an advisory for schools to protect the students from heatwave. You won’t believe it, but in the majority of the schools, there is no cooling system. Some classrooms in schools are even without ceiling fans,” a group of parents said.

When contacted, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said they are monitoring the situation and if the heat wave persists, a decision in this regard will be taken. He, however, said that the weather is expected to change in the coming days.

Director MeT Sonam Lotus told news agency Kashmir News Trust that the heatwave prevailing in Kashmir Valley will abate from June 26 till the end of the month. He said there will be intermittent rainfall in the Valley beginning from 26 June to the end of the month and temperatures are expected to come down considerably.
