Five foreign infiltrating militants killed close to LoC in Kupwara


Srinagar, June 16 : Security forces shot dead five suspected foreign militants in an encounter close to the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Friday.

The infiltration bid was foiled at Jumagund in the Keran sector at a time when there is ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.

General Officer Commanding of the Kupwara based Vajr Division, Major General Girish Kalia said in the recent past they have been getting a large number of intelligence inputs of likely infiltration from across the Line of Control.

Giving details about the operation, he said on Thursday they received a highly credible intelligence input from Jammu and Kashmir Police about possible infiltration of a group militants in the Jumagund area.

“Based on this input, multiple ambushes were established along the routes of infiltration. Simultaneously, the entire area astride the LC fence or the anti infiltration obstacle system was

kept under surveillance. At around midnight in the intervening night of June 15 and 16, movement

of terrorists was picked up by the alert troops braving challenging terrain and weather conditions,” Major General Kalia told reporters in Kupwara.

“The infiltrating militants were engaged with precise and accurate fire, and in the ensuing firefight, five unidentified militants were neutralized with no collateral damage. The terrorists were heavily armed and appeared to be very well trained,” he added.

Major General Kalia said the operation continued throughout the night and a detailed search of the area was undertaken at first light.

“During the search a large quantity of war like stores which include five AK series rifles, 15 magazines, ammunition, grenades, night vision devices, binoculars were recovered,” the Army officer said.

He said the operation is a reflection of the high level of synergy between the Indian Army and

Jammu and Kashmir Police who have been working tirelessly to ensure that our Jammu and

Kashmir remains peaceful and continues to progress on the path of development and prosperity.

In a statement, the Army said the operation clearly establishes the ugly face of proxy war and the

evil designs of terrorist groups which are determined to disrupt the peace in the valley.

“It also exposes the façade of false commitment to the ceasefire understanding between both countries which has repeatedly been exploited to perpetrate terror in J&K,” they said.
