Protest Erupts As Students Denied ‘Abaya’ Entry At Srinagar School

Srinagar, June 8: Several students from Vishwa Bharti Higher Secondary School in the Rainawari area of Srinagar held a protest against the school authorities on Thursday, alleging that they were not allowed to enter the premises while wearing ‘Abaya’.

One of the protesting students stated that the school principal had issued an order preventing them from wearing ‘Abaya’ inside the school premises. However, she claimed that the principal is now changing her statement.

The students accused the school authorities of introducing co-education despite it being an institution exclusively for girls. They demanded that the authorities establish a dress code for them.

Meanwhile, the school principal clarified that although the school has its own dress code, some girls do wear ‘Abaya’ and have never been prohibited from doing so. She explained that she had informed the teachers to ask the students not to wear ‘Abaya’ inside the school premises, but they can wear it until they reach the premises to maintain decorum.

Additionally, she emphasized that there is no higher authority involved in this decision. She believes that a proper dress code, which is followed elsewhere, should be followed in the school as well.

The principal further stated, “We will announce a specific colour and pattern for ‘Abaya’ that all students who wish to wear it must adhere to. We will not permit colourful ‘Abayas’ to be worn within the institution.”
