Several parts of Kashmir observe shutdown against demolition drive

Srinagar, Feb 15 : Several parts in Kashmir observed a shutdown on Wednesday against the ongoing demolition drive.

It was not immediately known as to who had called for the shutdown.

The shutdown was observed in parts of Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla. Witnesses said the shops and business establishments in Srinagar city centre were also shut. The public transport plied normally.

“This shutdown is against the demolition drive,” said a shopkeeper in Srinagar. He, however, expressed ignorance as to who had called for the shutdown.
The ongoing demolition drive which began last month has evoked strong criticism from political parties and local residents. The drive has triggered protests in various parts of J&K. This is the first time that parts of Kashmir observed a shutdown after the drive was launched by the government.
