Anti-encroachment drive: Showroom owner among 5 arrested in Jammu

Jammu, Feb 6: A day after an incident of stone pelting during an anti-encroachment drive in Sunjuwan area near Narwal in which a police personnel sustained injuries, five persons including an owner of a car showroom were taken into custody, police said on Monday.
Police added that the showroom owner, who had illegally constructed the structure on state land, allegedly created hindrance during an anti-encroachment drive following which stone pelting started.
“Five persons including an owner of the showroom have been arrested and booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code,” police added.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir administration has launched a statewide anti-encroachment drive to vacate kanals of land illegally occupied/encroached by the prominent people including politicians and bureaucrats during the popular governments.
However, District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Avny Lavasa in view of protest triggered when the District Administration was conducting an Anti encroachment drive in Malik Market on Saturday evening, have assured the people that no residence or small commercial shops on which livelihood of families is dependent will be distributed during Anti- encroachment drive.
“It is a pro people drive and only against those people who has encroached on state land for vested interest by misusing their power,” said Lavasa.
The Deputy Commissioner clarified that the action was taken by District Administration after the prominent showroom was issued notice and it failed to submit any justification in the stipulated time frame.
She said that the action is taken for the benefit of people and the land retrieved will be used for public interest activities.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the law and order situation is under control and appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration for their own benefit.
