“Capacity Building Workshop on strengthening Midwifery Services conducted at SKIMS”

Srinagar, Nov 17 : Today a capacity building workshop   on “strengthening Midwifery Services at National Midwifery Training Institutes was conducted at SKIMS. The objective of the workshop was to strengthen and to enhance acceptance of midwifery services and cadres and enable smooth integration of midwifery services and cadres into health delivery system besides, to improve adherence to respectful and evidence based intrapartum and postpartum family planning practices in hospitals linked to National Midwifery Training Institutes.

The inaugural ceremony was held at SKIMS in presence of Mission Director, NHM J& K Ms Ayushi Sudan ( IAS) , Director SKIMS Prof. Parvaiz A. Koul and Principal SKIMS Medical College Prof. Robbani and Medical Superintendent SKIMS Dr.Farooq A. Jan.

Director SKIMS in his speech said that India is witnessing change over the years and has marked reduction in maternal & prenatal mortality with technological advances. However, there is undue load on healthcare Institutions and as such integration of another services like “Midwifery Services” is necessity. He emphasized on sensitising people about normal deliveries which is safe and natural physiological process, he said. “Ceaserean sections should be done and encouraged only if indicated, which is otherwise curse “, he added. He expressed hope that today’s workshop will benefit all stakeholders and expected good midwifery cadre which will supplement institutional practices over a period of time.

Dr. Sawasti Das, Sexual and reproductive health and rights specialist UNFPA , New Delhi delivered key message and Dr. Minakshi Rohilla , Professor Department of Obs/Gynae PGIMER Chandigarh discussed the objectives of the workshop.
