Registration of PGs mandatory: Jammu Admin

Jammu, July 26 : The landlords in Jammu have been directed to register details of the tenants with the concerned police stations, the Jammu District Administration apart from registering of all Paying Guests (PGs) operational in the district, here on Tuesday.


Notably, ‘unregistered’ mushrooming of paying guests has increased manifold in the district in the last few years.


“As there is an imminent need to conduct verification of tenants and domestic helpers, it is also mandatory for the PG owners as well to register with the concerned police station under the similar order,” Avny Lavasa, Deputy Commissioner Jammu told UNI.


The Jammu District Administration on May 31 in an order directed the landlords to disclose details of all the tenants to prevent any untoward incident.


Lavasa, who is also the District Magistrate, said that the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu has brought to the notice time and again that there is an imminent need to conduct verification as there have been instances of anti-national, anti-social elements seeking hideouts in the residential areas in the guise of tenants and domestic helpers.


“Registration of PGs too falls under the similar ambit and if anybody running a PG and have not yet reported about the same to the concerned police station, action will be initiated in this regard as registration is mandatory as a precautionary measure,” said the DM.
“It is necessary that some measures be taken to make the landlords and property owners accountable before renting out and making available their premises to tenants and domestic helps,” an order read.


The district magistrate however said, that considering that the threat posed by such adverse elements as imminent danger to human safety, warrants immediate preventive measures under Section 144 of CrPC.


However, as per the order, owners within ten days of letting, subletting, renting out his/her/their house or part thereof to any tenant(s), shall submit without fail the detailed particulars of the tenant (s) as per the Declaration Form to be signed by both the owner and the tenant(s), to the concerned Police Station, either in person or by registered post addressed to the concerned Station House Officer (SHO).
