Petrol, diesel cheaper in Mumbai

New Delhi, July 15 : Petrol and diesel became cheaper in Mumbai on Friday after Maharashtra government’s announcement to reduce Value Added Tax by Rs 5 and 3 respectively on these fuel.

In its first cabinet meeting, the Eknath Shinde government on Thursday announced it will reduce VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 3 respectively.

According to a notification of Indian Oil Corporation, in Mumbai, now a litre of petrol is available at Rs 106.31 per litre while diesel at Rs 94.27 per litre.

However, in other metros prices remained steady for the 55th straight day on Friday.

Petrol in Delhi costs Rs 96.72 per litre and diesel Rs 89.62 per litre; in Chennai, Rs 102.63 and Rs 94.24; Kolkata the prices are Rs 106.03 and Rs 92.76, respectively.

The fuel prices had reduced sharply after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced cut on excise duty of petrol by Rs 8 per litre and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.

Following her announcement, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Kerala have reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to provide further relief to people.

Petrol and diesel prices in the country differ from state to state depending on VAT and freight charges. The central government too charges excise duty on motor fuels.
