Highway Closure: Prices Of Essentials Skyrocket

Srinagar, June 25: The skyrocketing prices of vegetables and other consumables due to continued closure of Srinagar-Jammu Highway have levied an additional burden on the common people who have been battling elements after recent incessant rains.


The prices of vegetables, fruits and other eatables have increased on average by over 30 percent during past few days after the continuous closure of national highway for four days.

Bashir Ahmed a vegetable trader at Habba kadal told CNS that almost all major vegetable and fruits price has been increased because of less supply due to continue closure of national highway.
Another wholesale trader in Khanyar market, who buys vegetables from other states, said one of the main reasons behind rise in vegetable and fruit price is jump in transportation costs as after reaching here and that too after days gap we have to pay extra charge due to which rates in markets have increased.

He however said that authorities should put their efforts to make Jammu Srinagar highway functional so that people associated with many businesses would not suffer.
A tray of eggs is selling at Rs 200. The consumers are finding it hard to purchase groceries due to skyrocketing prices.

Nazir Ahmed a fruit seller in Amira Kadal market said that the fruits are from different parts of India and we have to struggle a lot to bring them here especially during this highway closure when.
“Once we will get smoothly here on genuine charges obviously rates will be normal and when we are paying double amount then rates are little bit increased”, Ahmed added.

Pertinent to mention here that almost after four days gap,loaded trucks were allowed to move forward due to which prices of vegetables, fruits skyrocket In Kashmir.
